THE DRONES: A THOUSAND
MISTAKES (DVD)
4.5/5 (Shock)
The raw energy and brutal poeticism of The Drones, arguably the country's most important rock band, is a difficult beast to capture outside a live venue.
But their live, double disc DVD release, A Thousand Mistakes, does a remarkable job of documenting the gut-wrenching and twisted beauty of their music.
Led by their enigmatic songwriter and singer Gareth Liddiard, The Drones perform over four-and-a-half hours of material from their much-lauded back catalogue on this collection of live recordings.
The first disc is in two halves – one is an intimate performance called the Fairfield Warehouse Session and features 12 songs, including a brilliant rendition of the epic Sixteen Straws.
The second half of the first disc is a live electric concert from the East Brunswick Club.
The “bonus disc” includes live performances from France and Germany, as well as the Metro Theatre in Sydney.
An added treat is the live performance of their Kev Carmody cover River Of Tears at his tribute concert at the State Theatre.
This window into the world of The Drones, unlike many other arbitrary music DVDs released by artists, is a captivating release and one that fans of this awe-inspiring rock band are sure to return to for many years to come.
