Forget swine flu, Maitland is the grips of a highly contagious lotto fever as residents wait patiently for the $90 million Oz Lotto draw to drop tonight.

The city’s newsagents have been inundated with ticket purchases during the past couple of weeks with this morning predicted to be there busiest period yet.

“It’s been pretty insane,” Rod Porter owner of Central Newsagency, Maitland, said.

“We’ve been pretty busy since $40 million was on offer but now things have certainly stepped up a notch. I expect there will be a mad rush (today),” Mr Porter said. Owner of Rutherford Newsagency Yan Zhang said both if his Rutherford businesses have been busy since last Thursday.

“We’ve been pretty busy and there are still a few people out there who haven’t yet bought their tickets,” Mr Zhang said.

“So I suggest they get in early.”
