 Ben's last ride

Ben's last ride

02 Jul, 2009 08:14 AM
Friends of popular teenager Benjamin Peterson watched in horror as his final motorcycle ride ended in tragedy in a leafy Beresfield Street.

Ben, 19, from East Maitland, was flung from the motorcycle which hurtled into a car parked in Yarrum Avenue on Tuesday morning.

His friends gazed in horror as the bike smacked the car, hitting it with such force that it lifted up.

Ben – the holder of a learner driver’s permit which he had held for two months – was unable to stop his own fall as he catapulted under the car crashing down on him.

His friends grabbed a jack, which they operated with a pair of pliers in a desperate bid to raise the car, while others rang the ambulance.

Ben was taken to Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital with critical head and facial injuries.

He died shortly after 4pm on Tuesday.

His grieving friends spoke yesterday of a fun-loving larrikin, ready for any challenge, who died too young.

Seconds after Ben had mounted his beloved Yamaha YZ250F, he was asked if he wanted his helmet.

“No, I’ll be right,” said Ben, as he rode off on his final trip.

Police confirmed the youngster was not wearing a helmet.

His motorcycle had glanced the gutter, the front wheel turning to one side as the bike continued forward, a police spokesman told the Mercury.

It hurtled across the driveway of one house and the front lawn of another, sliding towards the parked car as the teenager was thrown off.

“Travelling at speed, the bike hit the rear side of the car, forcing it sideways for one metre,” a police spokesman said.

“The impact pushed the vehicle into the air and the rider slid under it.

“As the car came to the ground, it crushed the rider, causing severe head injuries.”

Ben’s friend since he was seven, Kane Campbell, said he and several mates saw it all.

“My mate jacked the car up while I called an ambulance,” Kane said.

“I had to jump under the car to assist Ben.

“My mate and I are both first aiders and we rolled Ben on one side as we tended him.

“But he was terribly hurt and we could do nothing for him.

“It all happened so quickly.”

And so we lose another young man in a preventable accident. When will our youth listen and learn.

As I read through this story, the bile rose in my throat.

I spend about 60 hours per week on our local roads and the things I see the youth of our area doing in their cars and on their bikes is mind-boggling.

Cars going side-ways round corners, cars and bikes hairing through red lights, bikes zig-zagging through the traffic. And so much more.

If you “kids” can’t think of yourself, think of the family and friends you hurt when you kill yourself and the family and friends of the people you kill and mame in the process.

To read Katie’s comment, and feel the sorrow that that poor girl is feeling because this young person chose to be a clown ... it’s heart rending.

Geeze! Slow down and think about what you are really doing on our roads!

Automobiles are weapons of destruction. They are as lethal as a pistol in a child’s hands. THINK!!!

Sick to the Heart

In response to “Sick to the Heart”, everything you have said in an adult’s eyes makes complete sense, and we can only hope that when our children get in a car or on a bike that they make the right decisions.

Calling BJ a clown is an insult to his family and friends ... did you know him? Did you know the fun and caring person that he was?

Were you able to witness first hand the love he had for his siblings, family, friends and parents and the love they reciprocated?

I challenge you to put yourself in the position of his family on the day of his passing, and the lasting images they will have of him in his final minutes.

So many people are quick to judge others and make assumptions based on newspaper reports. But these same people need to take a step back and think, perhaps when they were the same age, young, 10 ft tall and bullet proof, would they have been as old and wise?

In response to the comment made by ‘Sick to the Heart’ you claim to be on the road 60 hours a week and shocked by the things our youth do on the road.

Open your eyes, it’s not just the youth on our roads that do silly stuff. I see it across all age groups and both genders.

I would like to ask everyone out there who has passed judgement on Ben, and believe me there have been a few, have you ever made a mistake that under different circumstances could have cost you your life or that of someone else.

I know I have. I believe most of us have, as teenagers and adults. Fortunately for me, I have never paid the ultimate price that Ben did.

I agree with you that motor vehicles are weapons of destruction, I know this better than most, but so are words. Sometimes words are as destructive as any weapon.

There is no way for me to explain the pain felt by the 17-year-old brother of that “clown” after reading such a statement.

Now that was truly heartbreaking. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but some “adults” need to THINK before they pass judgement in a public forum.

Ben’s Extremely Proud Mother.
