 Chelsea’s Costa Rican mission

Chelsea’s Costa Rican mission

06 Nov, 2009 07:44 AM
Chelsea Parker isn’t a girl comfortable with sitting back and doing nothing.

In 2007, fresh out of high school, Chelsea went to Vietnam to build a house for a family of eight.

She shaved her long, flowing locks last year to raise money for people with cancer after her older brother Dylan was diagnosed with a benign brain tumour.

And, at the end of the month, the Duckenfield law student will head off to Costa Rica to work with a women’s organisation.

“These sorts of experiences definitely widen your eyes. You can see there are people in Australia complaining about things that people in other countries would absolutely love to have,” Ms Parker said.

“It really makes you appreciate what you have, but it also makes you see that money can be spent a lot more wisely than it is being spent here in Australia.”

Visiting Vietnam was an incredible experience and one Ms Parker was keen to replicate.

The former Maitland Showgirl will soon leave for the village of Boilley in Costa Rica, to work six days a week, eight hours a day to help those in need.

“I’m one of 10 Australian girls going on the three-week trip and there are a few things needed to be done,” she said.

“Boilley is right up in the mountains. It’s a whole day bus trip away from the city and a lot of these families don’t have hot water while some are struggling for food.”

The Organised Women’s Association of Boilley was established in 1996 by 15 women.

The association was created to encourage women and their families to make a living in an environmentally and culturally sustainable manner.

During her trip to Boilley, Ms Parker will help build two fish tanks to generate extra income. Her team will also build a playground for children.

“Part of the work we are doing is to help these people sell their produce locally and internationally.”

Ms Parker is asking for donations to buy books for children in Costa Rica. For more information contact chelsea.parker@bigpond.com
