The importance of wetlands across the Maitland area will become apparent next month on World Wetlands Day.
World Wetlands Day is celebrated every year, on February 2, to mark the anniversary of the signing of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance in Ramsar, Iran, in 1971.
Maitland residents are encouraged to join in the celebrations this year during a wetlands awareness day at Tenambit’s Earthcare Park on February 6.
“The response from local community groups wanting to be involved in the day has been really encouraging,” Hunter-Central Rivers Catchment Management Authority community support officer Grahame Price said.
“This shows that people in the Maitland area really value their wetlands and understand the importance of raising public awareness of these special places,”
Maitland’s World Wetlands Day celebrations will be held at the Earthcare Park, Metford Road, Tenambit from 9am to 3pm.
