A hotly debated proposal to deliver gas from Narrabri to a facility at Kooragang Island has been met with mixed reactions during a community information session in Morpeth.
Opposers and supporters of the Eastern Star Gas coal seam gas project gathered at St James’ Anglican Church Hall yesterday to express their views on the issue.
“The pipeline will come from Coolah into Newcastle, so it will run right through the Maitland area,” Wilderness Society community campaigner Prue Bodsworth said.
“So our concerns are that we will have this huge pipeline across the state that will open up other areas for gas development. And I don’t think people realise what this could mean.”
But north ward councillor Steve Procter said the people of Maitland, and its surrounding areas, have little to fear.
“I don’t think we have anything to worry about, in fact I think there could be some huge benefits,” Cr Procter said.
“In my opinion, the project would be an asset for us because it would ensure our future gas supply. I think it’s wonderful.”
ESG executive general manager stakeholder relations Peter Fox said the organisation recognises the community has a keen interest in the project.
“The community information sessions are a valuable opportunity for a two-way sharing of information to take place,” Mr Fox said.
