This is the team the Greens have pinned their hopes on
re-establishing the party’s representation on Maitland City Council.
Greens stalwart Jan Davis was named as the mayoral candidate when the party unveiled its candidates for the September 8 local government election on Thursday.
She will also head the ticket for west ward.
John Brown will return to contest central ward and Jan McDonald is the party’s candidate for north ward.
Child-care worker Samy Korbi will make his first foray into politics when he runs for the east ward.
Ms Davis said the teams for each ward were yet to be decided, but the party’s first and only Maitland City councillor Wendy White was likely to be on her ticket for west ward.
In the second time Ms Davis has contested the mayoral race, she will go head-to-head with the first confirmed candidate, the mayor of Maitland, Cr Peter Blackmore.
There is speculation about who the other competition could be, with Cr Henry Meskauskas suggested as the likely ALP candidate and the names of Liberal councillors Philip Penfold and Bob Geoghegan also in the mix.
Ms Davis said she had an understanding of the issues across the city and was particularly concerned about driving sustainable industries.
“I’m really confident about west ward,” she said.
“I feel strongly about the mix of industries and residents in the western suburbs.
“We’ve had industries in that area that were healthy, but now the residents are having issues with a smell and that’s really worrying.
“We really need to keep on the front foot and the Greens will do that.”
Mr Korbi said he put his name forward to run for council because “it’s about time I did something”.
His major focus was on the city’s waste management, particularly the need for a green waste collection and a kerbside pick-up.
Ms McDonald called for better connections, both geographical and social, between the north ward suburbs of Thornton and Woodberry and the rest of the city.
Mr Brown has a vision for a community-owned and run wind turbine to provide power into the grid and in turn generate income for the community.
