Kerbside pick-up: two votes to go

02 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
Councillor Henry Meskauskas is on a recruitment drive to convince the council that a kerbside pick-up is the only way to stop illegal rubbish dumping.

Cr Meskauskas (pictured) said he has four councillors in support of a kerbside pick-up trial and needed a majority of seven to bring in the service.

“Until we do the trial this is going to get worse and worse,” he said.

“It will continue to happen any day of the week because people can’t afford to pay the tip fees – they are too high.

“I will be pushing hard to get this off the ground.”

Council service planning and regulation group manager Bernie Mortomore said the kerbside pick-up was one of many options that would be considered.

Mr Mortomore said a report outlining options was being prepared in accordance with the 2011-2012 Operational Plan and the findings would be presented to council before the end of the financial year.

He said the kerbside pick-up trial would be voted on in the coming months and Cr Meskauskas would have the opportunity to put forward his case.

“Nothing has been decided yet, the options are part of a bigger picture and the kerbside pick-up is one part of it,” Mr Mortomore said.

Cr Meskauskas has been an advocate for the service for many years.

He said residents wanted the service and Maitland and Cessnock were the only council’s in the area that did not offer it.

“I have spoken about it on many occasions; all the council has to do is allocate the money to make it happen and we will alleviate this problem.

“We need to put this to the vote and the council is stalling on this issue and not bringing it back for the vote quickly enough,” he said.

“It’s in the too hard basket.

“We are a can-do council, so why can’t we do it?”

I couldn't agree more with the councillor. It isn't just about the price of the dump fee though. Many people don't have the means of getting their junk to the dump i.e. access to a trailer and /or the assistance to move awkward items that cannot be collected with the usual collection. I personally had to pay $164 (that put a strain on my budget) to move some junk.

geez, get with the times MCC, every other council in the region has had kerb side pick ups for years! and not to mention the dump fees are much cheaper also

Introducing street collection wont stop illegal dumping, this is a known fact. Take a look at other council area's like Newcastle, they have collections yet plenty of rubbish is still dumped illegally and the reason is that we can only put out so much rubbish for council to collect in the street collection. The rest then ends up dumped illegally asa it makes no sence to put it back where it came from (around the yard). The only way to stop illegal dumping is by reducing the tip fees, other then that it's pointless even trying.

Who voted for this Mr Mortomore?

Perhaps he could let us know the reason most other councils are wrong to have kerbside pickups and multiple tip vouchers. Andmanage keep the streets in good order.

Another reason to amalgamate the lower Hunter councils and get rid of the dead wood supposedly managing for us.

About time. Every other council area in the area, incl councils that that are smaller than Maitland. What about asking the people what they want
