 Leave our boy alone

Leave our boy alone

16 Mar, 2010 07:40 AM
The parents of a 13-year-old boy who once took a screwdriver to school to defend himself fear he is missing out on an education because of bullying.

Paul Appleton removed his son from Year 7 at Maitland Tutorial Centre, Telarah, following an incident where his son was hit on the head by another student yesterday.

Mr Appleton said it was the last straw following several previous incidents since the school year started, and a history of bullying involving the boy at East Maitland Public School.

“One kid wedged him over a table and a Year 11 boy said he was going to smash his teeth in,” he said.

“Then (yesterday) we get a call from the Department of Education (to say) that he’s been hit in the back of the head, and did we want them to call an ambulance or come to get him?

“I said I would come and get him.

“And he is not going back to school until (the department) sorts something out.”

A department spokesman confirmed that the incident occurred yesterday and the perpetrator had been suspended.

The spokesman said the other student had been suspended twice before for name calling, and Mr Appleton’s son had been warned for inciting.

Mr Appleton also reported the incident to police.

But he was critical of the department’s referral to send his son to Maitland Tutorial Centre for high school in the first place.

He said he had tried to enrol his son at All Saint’s College, St Joseph’s campus, Lochinvar, but his grades were not good enough.

Mr Appleton said he understood the tutorial centre was for students with learning difficulties, but later learned it was for students with behavioural issues.

He said his son had missed months of school last year because of bullying, and the latest incident meant he would fall further behind.

But he said he felt he had no choice but to pull his son out of school to take a stand against the department.

“You can’t go to school and concentrate when you’re worrying about being belted,” Mr Appleton said.

“I’m concerned for his safety – some of these kids (who attend the school) are huge.

“He doesn’t mind putting his head down and learning.

“I want my kids to get somewhere in life – I don’t want them to be stuck with one job.”

Mr Rudd did say that parents should stand up for their children against bullies & the NSW state government is one of the biggest bullies that I have had the displeasure of knowing.

the schools could not care less about bullies, i saw horrendous things happen to fellow students, as well as myself, when i was at school. that was now more than ten years ago. i still harbour a lot of resentment towards bullies and teachers. as far as i am concerned school is just a popularity contest and this is doing so much damage. but who is accountable? who are the parents of these bullies? maybe this guy should start doing some bullying of his own. then the police would surely take notice i bet. What an injustice i say. This makes me sick to the stomache to think here is another kid that will be swept under the carpet of the schools bullying coverups. all us victims of the past and present need to make a stand. but sadly that is unlikely as most of those subject to the bullying have had all confidence beaten or phsycologically tormented out of them. the only revenge is to rise above the bullies and not let it affect you adversely as an adult.

It is about time bullying was adequately dealt with and perpetrators punished appropriately. The mental anguish and stress, let alone the physical violence, can be so high young people live in misery. I am middle aged now but was bullied at school many years ago. Despite my appeals to teachers at the time I was told to grow up and be a man. One day in attempt to avoid going to school I (at the age of 11) took a large number of pills from our medicine cupboard hoping it would make me sick enough to allow me to stay home. It sure did, as I had overdosed on my parent’s sleeping pills, went into a coma and nearly died, spending 5 days in hospital. This shows you the depths of despair many victims of bullying endure.

I understand your frustration with both the Department of Education and Maitland Tutorial Centre. I had a child who attended the centre and it was nothing but drama. My child had never been in trouble with the law attends the centre next you know they are. The centre does not provide an sort of education that is of a high standard. For reward they get to play with lego what 15 yo wants too. It should be shut down or a better system put in place instead of the way it is. My child has now left school with minimal education and they wonder why...Department of Education has a lot to answer for....
