 LPG price jump angers motorist

LPG price jump angers motorist

09 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
There was a queue for petrol when Chris Edwards drove past the Woolworths fuel outlet at Green Hills yesterday, so he decided to fill up after he had done his shopping.

But when he returned, the price of LPG had jumped by 13 cents from 66.9 cents per litre to 79.9 cents per litre.

So he kept driving.

And the East Maitland resident has vowed never to return to a Woolworths petrol bowser, nor a supermarket.

Mr Edwards said he had been paying about 63 cents or 65 cents per litre recently, before he reported the hike late yesterday.

“You don’t mind the price changing by five or six cents a litre, but this was 13 cents,” he said.

“And it was the same gas – there wasn’t a tanker delivery.”

Outraged, Mr Edwards sought an explanation.

“I rang Woolworths fuel in Sydney to get them to justify the 13 cent increase and they told me someone would get back to me within five days,” he said.

“They call that customer service.

“I do usually go to the Woolworths petrol station for convenience, but I won’t be filling up there again.

“I’m just asking people to sit back and think for five minutes about what they’re really saving [with petrol discounts] if they’re jacking the price to start with.”

While Mr Edwards’ complaint was levelled at Woolworths, whether there had been a similar price rise at other fuel retailers in Maitland was not known when the Mercury went to press.

A Woolworths spokesperson said that due to the nature of the fuel industry, prices did fluctuate.

“The recent increase in the price of LPG reflects an increase in the wholesale price,” the spokesperson said.

“We review our prices daily and always try to remain competitive, where we can, to offer our customers good value.”

How about relating the retail price according to the price you paid for that load of fuel. I won't be going to Woolworths to shop or buy fuel again either after reading this.

Just went for a drive, Maitland to Newcastle, found all servos prices for LPG at 79.9 - 79.5 except for two servo's both of these on Industrial drive, Mayfield, BP 75.9 and United still 66.9, asked the cashier why the price hike, "Because we were telephoned yesterday and told to raise the price." Asked if this was a new shipment answer "NO". so what validates raising the LPG price when it is old stock they are selling.

Talk about corporate greed.

Anybody who buys any sort of fuel from the supermarket chain garages has rock in their heads. After they've squeezed all the other operators out of the market, they'll charge what they like. But as long as it saves you a dollar or two a week, that's all that seems to matter these days. And we criticise our politicians for taking the short term view!

I was expecting it, Government puts a rebate in place so every one converts to gas then when they need the money push the price up to make some money bunch of thieves.. the Australian government needs to put there foot down and regulate the price of fuel..

If fuel goes up ulp or lpg or diesel take some tax off the price to keep it balanced..

Bring in a standard fuel rate make the fuel company's be able to only change the price once a week.

A thought for all motorists who buy fuel at Woolies or Coles, how much do you think fuel will cost when they have driven the independants to the wall and have no competition?

The Government which has introduced the Carbon Tax for a supposedly cleaner environment has increased the LPG levy by 2.5cpl , further deterring people from using the cleaner fuel!

It's all about getting the Budget back to surplus not about the environment !!!

Wyoming (NSW) Woolworths jumped from 63.9 to 79.9 per litre of LPG, only two days apart. I will never drive into a Woolies servo again. Other suppliers went to 69.9 on the same day, 10cents difference.
