Metal flies in face of driver

11 Nov, 2004 09:11 AM
A Kurri Kurri teacher had a miraculous escape on Tuesday morning when an iron bar speared through her car windscreen, sending an explosion of glass into her face.

Blinded by flying glass, Christine Moxon struggled to steer her Nissan sedan to the side of John Renshaw Drive at Beresfield after the bar flew off a passing truck.

Ms Moxon is the third person to become victim to items flying from trucks into cars on Maitland area roads in the past three months.

Scone jockey Gregory Edward Cribb was killed on August 9 when an iron bar smashed through his windscreen on the New England Highway near Branxton and hit his head.

A Branxton mother and her daughter Kerry and Kristy Gimbert also had a close call when a heavy piece of burning metal - part of a truck's worn brake drum - shattered their car's windscreen on the New England Highway at Harpers Hill on September 2.

Recovering at her Willow Tree home yesterday, Ms Moxon told how her windscreen "exploded" in her face.

"I remember a truck coming from the other direction on John Renshaw near Beresfield about 11.15am on Tuesday," the teacher, who trains veterinary nurses at TAFE in Kurri Kurri said.

"It all happened so quickly I didn't notice very much," she said.

"A big chunk of something burst through my windscreen and landed in my lap.

"It was lucky I was able to steer the car because I couldn't see anything.

"I had stopped for about a second - then saw I was right in the middle of the road.

"But I was able to steer to the side of the road where I stayed.

"I had been knocked on the head by something which I was told was my rear view mirror flying past.

"There were bits of glass all over the place and a lot of it was embedded in me."

Ambulance officers treated Ms Moxon for multiple cuts and she was taken to Maitland Hospital before being discharged.

"I know I was extremely lucky because one man was killed in a similar accident recently," she said.

"The lump of steel that hit me weighed 5.7kg and was about the size of a tissue box.

"I cannot described the truck that passed me - I think it was a white tabletop vehicle."

Anyone who saw the accident at Beresfield on Tuesday is asked to contact Maitland police on 4934 0200 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
