Maitland will join a nationwide protest to stop delivery of gas from Narrabri to Kooragang Island through the region.
Residents will gather at Minister’s Park, Maitland, on Sunday, for a national day of action opposing the coal seam gas mining project.
“This rally is part of an awareness campaign to let
people know what could
happen, but also we want people to know that we are very much against this project because we just don’t need the gas,” rally organiser and Maitland Greens’ member Wendy White said.
Eastern Star Gas wants planning approval from the state and federal governments for the pipeline project.
The pipeline will come from Coolah into Newcastle and will run through the Maitland area.
Ms White said despite consultation meetings between Eastern Star Gas and Maitland community members, residents remained largely in the dark about the proposal.
“Eastern Star Gas has decided to bring a pipeline down through Luskintyre and very few people seem to know what’s going on,” Ms White said.
“Only about 12 people attended the Morpeth consultation session and four attended the Beresfield session so obviously that’s not a lot of people.”
The rally, starting at 11am, will include speakers from The Wilderness Society and the Lock The Gate Alliance.
