Convicted former detective sergeant Roger Rogerson will tell his side of the story as part of this year’s Look Who’s Talking program.
The decorated police officer, who gained notoriety as a drinking partner of Neddy Smith, was convicted of perverting the course of justice and lying to the 1999 Police Integrity Commission and served two jail terms.
He was released after the second in 2006.
Maitland city librarian Keryl Collard said Mr Rogerson started writing while he was in jail.
His book, The Dark Side, was launched last year.
“He started to write while he was in prison, and he’s telling his side of the story,” Ms Collard said.
Mr Rogerson will bring his story to Maitland in May.
The Look Who’s Talking program was unveiled with the Fiction to Film series at Maitland Gaol in January, and will continue with a celebrated list of writers.
Professor Steffen Lehmann, innovative Chair of Architectural Design at the University of Newcastle, will continue the program this month.
He will be followed by popular social analyst Hugh Mackay, renowned astrologer and writer for Vogue and Cosmopolitan magazines Jessica Adams, and award-winning biography writer Jacqueline Kent, whose latest subject was Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard.
Also appearing will be sports broadcaster Craig Hamilton, Vietnam War veteran Don Tate and children’s authors Alyssa Brugman and Pamela Freeman.
The year will culminate with Steve Kilbey, lead singer-songwriter and bass guitarist for iconic Australian band, The Church, who will provide an insight into his achievements as producer, poet, writer and painter.
He will also perform an acoustic set.
