 Save our bushland

Save our bushland

09 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
Hundreds of Maitland residents have signed a petition calling for Maitland City Council to rezone a patch of remnant bushland earmarked for residential development.

Bushland bound by Adam Avenue, Denton Park Drive and Weblands Street, at Aberglasslyn, is under threat after being zoned for residential development under the Maitland Local Environmental Plan (LEP).

But residents are calling for council to rezone the land and retain the remnant bush.

“We’ve been collecting signatures for the past six months and we’ve got hundreds of people asking council to rezone the land,” Maitland Greens member Jan Davis said.

“And this is something we are going to be campaigning on in the next local government elections. It’s a mature piece of remnant bushland that should be kept and there is no excuse for us to lose this because it is owned by council.”

In December, last year, Maitland City Council announced that 18 additional infill sites would be zoned for residential development, providing land for 250 additional homes.

“We are seeing this sort of thing happen all over Maitland and once this remnant bushland is gone that is it,” Ms Davis said.

She said Maitland had one of the lowest rates of remnant vegetation in the Hunter with close to 90 per cent of the city’s green field sites being slated for development.

“Maitland remains a concern with less than 10 per cent of remnant vegetation (including woodland and native scrub) remaining in the Maitland Local Government Area,” Ms Davis said.

“We are basically cutting down trees to build houses.”

Good going council. Build more houses for humans, lose beautiful native bushland for animals.

In 2001 there was less than 7% of native bushland left in the Maitland area. Willing to bet that there is a lot less there now cause council is getting greedy.

Grow up and leave the bushland for the animals and our children, etc.

Maitland Council needs to seriously look at its record of removing remnant native vegetation. 10 per cent native vegetation is not something to be proud of, in fact it is apalling given the size of this city. What we will end up with is a concrete jungle city in regional NSW.
