A 21st birthday party ended in an alleged knifing incident, leaving one man in hospital and another arrested on the weekend.
Police and ambulance paramedics from Rutherford were called to a disturbance at the 21st birthday party in Northern Avenue, Tarro, about 12.30am on Saturday, a police spokesman told the Mercury yesterday.
When they arrived at the scene, they found a 27-year-old man bleeding from a stab wound to the stomach. Paramedics immediately began treating the man to stop the bleeding.
An ambulance took him to Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery.
His condition was reported as stable yesterday.
“Police will allege that threats were made to a number of people at the birthday party and objects were being thrown at guests,” Central Hunter duty officer Inspector Tony Joyce said.
“It will be alleged that some time after that, a man armed himself with a number of knives and these were thrown at some guests in the front yard.
“A decision was then made by some of the guests to disarm the man,” Insp Joyce said.
“In that process, police will be alleging one of the guests was recklessly wounded.”
Police arrested a 27-year-old man from neighbouring Central Avenue at the scene.
He was taken to Maitland Police Station where he was charged with reckless wounding.
The man was refused bail and will appear in Maitland Local Court today.
