Telstra crash leaves millions without internet

24 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
Millions of Australians were left disconnected and disgruntled as Telstra’s internet service crashed on Thursday.

Telstra’s fixed-line and mobile internet service failed, knocking an estimated three million users offline for about an hour.

Customers could not access the Next G mobile service, fixed-line broadband, BigPond mail service and could not connect to international sites.

The carrier lost connectivity in every state at 1.50pm on Thursday, but most customers were reconnected by 3pm, Telstra’s Karina Keisler said.

“The cause of the outage is unclear at this stage, and while it’s since been restored, we’re working quickly to try to identify the cause,” she said.

Internet provider Dodo said it played a role in the failure.

Dodo CEO Larry Kestelman said one of the company’s network routers had caused an issue between Dodo and Telstra, which had “larger ramifications than it should have with other providers”.

“Even though everything is up and running now, the two companies are still investigating the root cause of the problem,” he told technology blog Gizmodo.

Microblogging site Twitter was inundated with posts from users venting their confusion and frustration, with some saying their connections were still down after 4.30pm.

Telstra was also flooded with calls to its customer service centres, creating a backlog.

Telstra would have a clearer idea of what went wrong by Friday, Ms Keisler said.

Telstra posted the following message on its Twitter page about 4.45pm: “Majority of customers are back online, however we are still working on the remaining down services.”

You should try in the bush..FNQ 40minutes out of Cairns, often enough during the day you are left with either no connection at all or it's so slow that you wish you still had dial-up....

Thank you Telstra for a mediocre service.....

@peter g - those of us who need internet access to be able to work from home! Email, skype, access to work related hosted services all need a stable internet connection. It is not just about surfing and footy!

Nice to find out after an hour and a half on the phone trying to diagnose the problem, you think they would have known about the outage and told people that had phoned up.

OMG no internet for an hour, guess you didn't make that comment via the internet peter g?

Some of us rely on it for our lively hood, so an hour down means $$$

The lengthy outage would have also crippled a lot of Govt Departments, Councils and Businesses who rely on the Internet being available 24/7 for their Telephony systems to operate. So it was more serious than "just" losing access to the Internet and email.

Who Cares?

Well 1000's of business that rely on the Internet to operate also schools, banks, doctors, news outlets the list goes on... it just shows you how fragile the Internet can be.

And because of the ongoing political issues it's been buried by most media.
