Thin models disturb plus-size girl

30 Sep, 2008 08:43 AM
With her gorgeous curves and healthy body image model Blaise McCann seems a world away from the controversy surrounding the latest batch of too-thin models taking to the catwalk.

But the Lorn teenager and plus-size model still has plenty to say about the matter.

“When I see some of these girls it’s disturbing to see how thin some of them are,” Blaise, 16, said.

“Some of them don’t look like they can breathe. They look skeletal and it certainly doesn’t present a good body image. It’s kind of sickening.”

The fashion industry has come under fire once again for promoting underweight models after models displaying visible rib cages were seen gracing the catwalk at Milan Fashion Week.

Now Blaise, who stands at 181cm and wears a size 16, is calling on designers to take a stand against promoting an unhealthy body image.

“It’s not only the fashion industry that has to be accountable, it’s also the designers who won’t make clothes for bigger girls or who don’t want larger women wearing their clothes. I mean, who has the right to say that?” Blaise said.

“If they want coat hangers, get coat hangers, but models are human beings, people, and they need to eat and look healthy.”

This year Blaise was named one of the top three finalists in the Australian City Chic plus-size modelling competition after years of struggling with her own weight issues.

She is now about to sign a contract with BGM Models.

“Being thin doesn’t necessarily mean you’re beautiful, but because of what the fashion industry does, well, some girls think they have to be skinny to be beautiful,” she said.

And the dangerous nature of the modelling world is not lost on Blaise.

“I have a friend who recently got into modelling and she barely eats and it’s really scary to actually see her like that,” she said.

“And I think one of the biggest problems is also that these really thin models don’t even look like women.”

But the harshness of the modelling world hasn’t deterred Blaise.

“I certainly don’t have a problem with who I am,” she said.
