One of Australia’s oldest wineries paid tribute to its most famous drop at the weekend.
Wyndham Estate celebrated 10 Vintages of BIN 555, the company’s best known shiraz recognised in 55 countries around the world, with a series of specialised master classes and tastings on Saturday and Sunday.
Cellar door manager Grant Aylett-Clews said the Dalwood venue held wine master classes each month, but the weekend was dedicated to the BIN 555.
He said the idea of the celebrations was to showcase how the winery had grown through the BIN 555 vintage.
The 10 vintages covered 1997 through to 2006, including the 2004 crop that was the first wine in the southern hemisphere to win the prestigious Vinitaly trophy at the international competition held in Verona, Italy.
Mr Aylett-Clews also recommended the 2005.
He said the secret to the success of the BIN 555 was, while it was consistent from year-to-year, each vintage was distinctive.
“It’s a medium bodied wine that’s affordable and easy drinking,” he said.
Mr Aylett-Clews said, in addition to Australian wine drinkers, the international distribution of the vintage also drew overseas visitors to the cellar door, particularly from Canada and Asian countries.
