Woman in drugs denial agrees to DNA testing

01 Nov, 2011 03:00 AM
Police will use DNA testing in the case against an East Maitland woman who has denied 10 drug-related charges, to determine whether she handled bags and jars containing illegal substances found in her home.

Jeanette Bieman, 43, submitted to the police’s application for a DNA swab when she appeared briefly in court yesterday.

She has pleaded not guilty to 10 charges laid after police searched her Brisbane Street home on July 13, including allowing her residence to be used as drug premises; possession of a total of 3.94 grams of amphetamine; possession of nine grams of cannabis; possession of one LSD tablet; possession of restricted substances Sustanon 250 (testosterone) and five Seroqel tablets containing Quetiapinene Funarate; possession of a crossbow without a permit; and possession of $1560 suspected to be the proceeds of crime.

The application made to the court for a DNA sample from Ms Bieman said police believed there were reasonable grounds that “taking of a forensic procedure might produce evidence tending to confirm or disprove the suspect committed the offence”.

She denied knowledge of the substances when police searched her home.

The DNA test was expected to be carried out at Maitland police station yesterday.

Magistrate Sharron Crews adjourned the matter to next Monday to allow Ms Bieman’s solicitor to consider the brief of evidence. The hearing date is likely to be next year.

Police documents before the court said the police’s allegation that the home was being used as a drugs premises was based on the fortification of the house, including steel frame security doors, installation of CCTV cameras, possession of police radio scanners and prohibited weapons found inside the premises.

The police search also revealed drug paraphernalia including plastic resealable bags, electronic scales, written records of transactions, syringes and tourniquets.

In addition, police found an amount of prohibited drugs including amphetamines, cannabis and restricted substances at the house.
