Dylan Bennett and Usain Bolt have a bit in common.
They are both sprinters, they both excel over the 100m and 200m distances and now, after a recent purchase by Bennett, they have the same type of shoes.
Bennett has just picked up a pair of running spikes – the bright colours of the Jamaican flag combined with cheetah-like spots – similar to those used by Bolt during his record-breaking deeds at the 2009 World Athletics Championships in Berlin and the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
Bennett will be hoping for similar results as the 12-year-old attempts to secure a Bolt-like double in the 100m and 200m events for 12-years boys at the NSW All Schools Carnival at Homebush.
The Year 7 student at Hunter Valley Grammar School (HVGS) has been close before.
He won the 200m event at the same carnival last year as a Year 6 student, to qualify for the 2008 Pacific Schools Games.
The year before he won the 100m for his age group at the NSW Primary Schools Sports Association (PSSA) Athletics Carnival, but missed the 200m gold medal by 0.02 seconds.
This time around Bennett, who competes at Thornton Little Athletics Club, is determined to claim the prestigious sprinter’s pair.
“I would love to get the double,” Bennett said.
Only one thing stands in his way.
“There is one guy (Dylan Fuller from Sydney) who runs around the same time as me and I’m hoping I can beat him,” he said.
Bennett, who trains under Warren Metcalfe at Wangi Wangi, brings form to the event after a personal best time of 12.4 seconds in the 100m at the Combined Independent Schools (CIS) Athletics Championships, which doubled as a record.
The NSW All Schools Carnival will be Bennett’s fourth State event – two for secondary schools and two for primary schools.
Bennett’s campaign begins on Friday with the heats of the 100m while he will compete in the 200m on Saturday.
He is one of a record eight students from HVGS competing at the NSW All Schools Carnival.
Miles Cole-Clark will be in with a shot in the 16-years boys high jump after winning gold at the CIS Athletics Championships with a leap of 1.93m.
The HVGS contingent also includes Austin Bond, Brooke Carroll, Alex Humphreys, Michelle Murphy, Hannah Phillips and Ashleigh Resch.
Five primary students from HVGS also competed at the NSW PSSA Athletics Carnival at Homebush last week.
