Jack Newman was jumping for joy when he reached his goal last week.
And it was a matter of third time lucky as Newman earnt selection in the NSW team to compete at the School Sport Australia 12-years and under track and field championships at Homebush later this month.
“All I have wanted to do is make the State team,” Newman said.
The Year 6 student at Bolwarra Public School gained a guernsey on the State team after a string of strong performances at the NSW Primary School Sports Association (PSSA) State Athletics Carnival last week.
It was the third time Newman had been to the carnival during his primary school years and while he missed out on the medals across his five events it was his “best carnival by far”.
After running a personal best time of 2.28 in the heats of the 800m Newman qualified for the 10-man final while he also claimed semi-final berths in the 100m and 200m.
Combined with his form in the long jump and shot put, it was enough for NSW team officials to grant the 11-year-old a special invitation to participate at the national carnival.
“They said to me because I was in so many events and I had done well over the carnival that they wanted me to come and do the multi-event,” Newman said.
Newman, who lives at Largs, will compete in a multi-event entailing the 100m, 800m, shot put and his favourite discipline, long jump, at the School Sport Australia carnival.
“I hope to do well in the multi-event,” Newman said.
Points will be awarded for performances in heats and finals.
Medals will be given to those with the most accumulated points, with the Maitland Little Athletics Club member striving towards a podium finish.
The championships will be held from November 30 to December 3.
