 Tough equation for Weston win

Tough equation for Weston win

05 Nov, 2009 08:28 AM
Weston have little to play with but it may be enough to win its first match of the 2009-2010 season in the Maitland and District Cricket Association first grade competition.

Weston need to snare eight wickets at Kurri Central on Saturday before Eastern Suburbs score 143 runs in order to break its winning duck.

The home team, which has failed to snare a victory from the opening two rounds of the season, scored 220 from 64 overs before the Griffins finished at 2-78 from the remaining 16 overs on day one of the two-day encounter.

Runs on the board always come in handy but Weston captain Mick Harwood knows what is required to start the ball rolling on day two of the round three match on Saturday.

“We’ll be doing well to get the win, we really need a couple of early wickets,” he said.

Harwood said he was pleased to pick up the wicket of Griffins opener Rick Meehan (32) late on Saturday but it was opposing captain Brendan Mills (37 not out) that was next on the hit list for Weston.

“It was good to see the end of him (Meehan)...but we need to get Millsy out,” Harwood said.

Weston also have to contend with the likes of Jason Allen and Adam Seymour so Harwood understands the equation for his team, considering Easts have the full complement of overs to play with.

“They are in the box seat if they bat sensibly because they have 80 overs to get the runs,” Harwood said.

“So it is up to us, we have to attack and bowl them out.”

Thornton Park will be looking to do the same against Raymond Terrace at Jack Collins Oval on Saturday, but the equation there seems much steeper.

Thornton need eight wickets before the Lions score the 51 runs required for first innings points.

Fortunately the visitors snared two wickets late on day one to maintain a glimmer of hope but the Lions look to have the match under control and may even consider an outright result.

Lions skipper Graham Maytom will be looking towards his opening bowlers Troy Mason and Joey Collins to do the damage once more after the pair picked up four wickets each on day one.

But first the Lions need to secure the win and Brad Bidner will resume on 41 not out while Sam Jenkinson (4) is the other unbeaten batsman.

Daniel McGovern was the sole wicket taker for Thornton last week after the visitors executed a run out to dismiss Lions opener Nathan Ward for 43.
