In a testament to the strength of Maitland’s junior women’s football, players from the city make up a quarter of the under-13s Northern NSW representative squad.
Jenna Kennedy, Kate Levick, 2011 Maitland Mercury junior sportsperson of the year nominee Georgia Little and Maddi Dean will head to Canberra in April for the FFA National Junior Championships.
Kurri Kurri player Hannah Bourke is also part of the squad.
Head coach Ryan Campbell selected the team at the three-day high performance camp last month.
Campbell coached last year’s under-13 women’s team to second place at the championships and Northern NSW Football technical director David Smith is expecting positive results this year.
“This year we have a very technically sound group,” he said.
“All the girls have been part of the centre of excellence program and performances at the recent camp have given us high hopes of a very competitive squad.
“Ryan has put together a good program in preparation for the championships including a tournament in Bathurst and he believes that this squad is on par with last year’s.”
The selected side will travel to Bathurst to participate in a girls’ tournament hosted by Football NSW from March 2 to 4 in the lead-up to the championships.
