Danielle Redding and Kally Lewis stand at opposite ends of the sporting field.
Redding guards the goals with her gloves as the custodian of her team, while Lewis goes full steam ahead as a striker trying to dazzle defenders and put the ball into the back of the net.
But the pair, who play for Rutherford Football Club, will combine powers as part of the Northern NSW girls’ under-13 team in search of national glory.
Redding and Lewis will compete at the under-13 National Championships in Canberra in April and they have high expectations from their first Australia-wide competition.
“We are hoping to do well,” Redding said.
“This is our first year but last year the team (Northern NSW girls’ under-13s) finished second so we will be looking to go even better.”
They will be up against the best in the business from across the country for their age group and they are looking forward to the challenge despite being a bit younger than some of their opponents.
“Danielle has only just turned 13 and Kally is 12 so they are 12 months ahead of their time,” Rutherford Football Club president David Walker said.
“And from a club point of view we are very proud of the girls.
“This is what you want to see your juniors doing – going on and playing representative football.”
For this dynamic duo it has been a meteoric rise up the representative ranks.
They started last season with Rutherford before playing for the Hunter Valley Hawks at the Northern NSW State titles.
From there they were picked up by Northern, including time with the Johnny Warren Program, and after a series of camps and trials, were notified of selection in the nationals squad late last month.
It has been a busy time for Redding and Lewis, who would love to play for the Matildas one day, and training takes up most afternoons during the week.
This will continue as commitments for nationals and the Northern NSW Elite Athletes Program progress as the season gets closer to kick off.
