The Weston Swifts claimed a thrilling golden goal grand final victory over arch rivals the Tenambit Sharks at Thomas & Coffey Oval on Saturday.
It took the Swifts until the 14th minute of extra time to score the winning goal and take the Inter District Division 3 silverware with a 2-1 victory.
The Swifts took the lead 10 minutes into the second half after a scoreless first stanza but the Sharks were quick to reply.
Rob Alexander found the back of the net 60 seconds later to tie it up and the scores remained level until full time.
In extra time the Swifts used six players in defence to frustrate the Sharks and claimed the win with a brilliant counter attack goal.
Tenambit Sharks publicity officer Grant Black said both the Swifts goals were against the run of play, but that they deserved the win.
“We had a lot of the possession and controlled the ball well,” he said.
“Our strength is knocking the ball around and holding onto it, and they knew that, so they put six guys at the back, and when they dispossessed us they knocked it forward and that’s how they scored both their goals.”
The two sides had been split before Saturday’s game with the Swifts winning 3-2 in round nine at home and the Sharks taking full points from their round 16 clash, 1-0.
The win would have capped off a brilliant season for the Tenambit club which claimed the reserve grade grand final against the Swifts in extra time.
The Sharks also won the Club Championship and regular season premiership and will make the step up to Inter District Division 2 next season.
