Sports stars shine bright

A group of Maitland sports stars will be rewarded for their on-field efforts at a Hunter sports awards presentation next month.

The Maitland high school students excelled across a range of sports to earn themselves recognition at the Hunter Secondary Schools Sports Association Annual Blues Presentation on December 12.

Hunter regional sports officer Peter Moore said Blues awards were given to athletes that not only represented their zone, region or State, but also displayed outstanding levels of sportsmanship.

“The decision is made by a committee about who should receive the accolade and who should not,” Moore said.

“They are given to athletes that excel in their chosen sport.”

Rutherford Technology High School’s Caitlin Logan will be rewarded for her prowess on the hockey field.

Logan, who was already presented with the Newcastle District Women’s Hockey Association award at the Hunter Academy of Sport presentation in January, has been a regular in the Hunter’s hockey team for the past three years.

Maitland Grossmann High School student Ashlee-Kate Rohowicz will receive a blues award for netball.

Rohowicz was the only Maitland representative in the Hunter team that took out the NSW Combined High Schools Netball Championships in June.

A number of Sports awards will also be handed out to students who excelled in age competition rather than open level.

“They are for students who are a bit younger and stand out against competitors there own age,” Moore said.

Jacarna Fenton, from Cessnock High School, is in line to receive a Sports award for excellent achievement in athletics.

The 14-year-old Abermain sprinter recently toured Canada and out-paced American and Canadian sprinters, bringing home seven medals in the 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m.

Kristy Price, from Maitland Grossmann High School, also sprinted over the line to earn a Sports award for athletics.

The Year 9 student won a bronze medal in the 400m at the NSW All Schools athletics carnival at Sydney Olympic Park last month.

Joshua Morrison, Maitland High School’s 2008 Sportstar of the Year, will again be recognised for his sporting successes.

Despite his diverse achievements, which include soccer, rugby league, basketball and cross country, Morrison will be honoured with an award for his number one sport, touch football.

Morrison played in the open boys, Year 9-10 and NSW CHS touch football teams in 2008.

Fellow touch footballer Justin King, from Rutherford Technology High School, will also be rewarded for an exceptional year on the footy field, which saw him make the NSW combined high schools’ team.

Hunter Region under-16s coach Mick Chipperfield said King was the stand-out player in a team that went through the State championships undefeated.

“He was the most outstanding player in our team and we went thorough undefeated so he really deserved to make the NSW side,” Chipperfield said.

The final category at the annual Blues presentation is the special mention, which is given to athletes who have already received a Blues award and continue to achieve.

“It’s for consistent achievers and also for sports that don’t have a regional competition like sailing or orienteering,” Moore said.

One local product who falls under this category is Maitland Grossmann High School’s Joshua Blatchford, who will be recognised for his achievement in orienteering.

Blatchford was named the Australian School Orienteering champion at an event in Maryborough, Queensland in September.

Blatchford’s national title coincided with the announcement he was to be one of three 17- to 20-year-olds chosen to represent Australia at the Oceania Championships in New Zealand in January.

A number of special awards will also be announced at the presentation, which will be held at West Leagues Club.
