Branxton have ended the unbeaten run of Kurri with a two-point victory in round three of the Hunter River District Golf Association A-grade pennant competition.
The 4.5 to 2.5 triumph at Singleton yesterday pushed Branxton equal with Kurri on the 2012 competition ladder and created a sense of self-belief in the winning squad as they aspire to premiership glory.
“When you are winning everybody is keen and a lot of people want to play,” Branxton captain Tony Lamb said. “That is what we have at the moment and if we can keep everyone rolling along then I think we have a very good chance of winning the whole thing.”
Yesterday it was Mark Hale and Adrian Chomiszak leading the way for the Branxton squad.
Hale was five under through his 11 holes in a seven and five win while Chomiszak remains unbeaten in the 2012 pennant campaign after finishing all square.
Ricky Bush (10 and eight), Mick Tracey (two and one) and Lamb (one up) were the other winners for Branxton, while Lee Houston (three and two) and Mark Moylan (seven and six) lost their individual battles.
This result sees Branxton move
into a share of second position with Kurri on six points midway through the season.
“It was a very important win for us and we were stoked with it,” Lamb said.
“Going into the match I thought we had a good chance because we had been going well and there had been a lot of interest in the A-grade team.
“But the boys did well – it was what they needed to do and they got it together.”
Also at Singleton yesterday, Maitland’s attempt to reach their fourth consecutive final and claim their second title in three seasons was dealt another blow.
Maitland were upset 4-3 by Singleton in what was the host’s first win of the season.
Singleton’s Nathan Bagnall proved to be the difference when the scores were locked a three apiece late in proceedings.
This leaves Maitland languishing at the bottom of the ladder with only one win next to their name with three regular rounds remaining.
The Vintage remain competition frontrunners with a comfortable victory (5.5 to 1.5) over Stonebridge, while Muswellbrook (7-0) made it a clean sweep against Scone.
