Leslie letting the sun shine on his career

28 Nov, 2007 11:59 AM
Somewhere under the laid-back exterior, excitement is bubbling within Tenambit teenager Tom Leslie.
But he might still be coming to terms with the all-expenses-paid sporting week of a lifetime that awaits him, to show any outward enthusiasm.
The 15-year-old Maitland Golf Club member is preparing to join 80 junior golfers from across Australia at Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast next week, for the 2007 Professional Golfers Association of Australia (PGA) Junior Festival of Golf.
Leslie earned his place in the week-long golfing event by winning the nine-hole junior shootout handicap event held at Maitland Golf Club for players aged between nine and 16 earlier in the year.
Similar events have been held across Australia and it all climaxes with an action-packed week of golf on the Sunshine Coast, which coincides with the Australian PGA championships.
The Maitland High School student said he had no real expectations when he entered the Maitland event and was looking forward to the experience.
"I didn't really know and I only won by two shots or something," Leslie said.
The golfing festival officially begins next Tuesday with a barbecue lunch with some of Australia's top tour professionals, followed by lessons with a professional golfer.
Players will then hit the fairways on Wednesday and Thursday for 18 holes at Noosa Springs Golf Club and Twin Waters Golf Club.
Leslie will also get to watch some of the sport's best battle it out for a slice of the $1.4 million prize purse in the Australian PGA championships on Thursday at Coolum.
Not bad for a someone who took up the sport two years ago.
"I took up golf two years ago because a few of mates were doing it," he said.
"I just enjoyed it, I liked smashing the ball."
