A greyhound exchange with a Maitland connection could lead to a delightful double for Ken Cheetham at Maitland Showground tonight.
The Lochinvar based Cheetham will field dogs in the heats of the Bill Deguara Trophy and the Maitland to City and both will be in with a good showing.
But it will be Crucial Decision, jumping from box one in heat one of the Bill Deguara Trophy (race four) at Maitland Greyhounds, that provides the inextricable link to Maitland.
Cheetham bought Crucial Decision from the Melbourne-based Kevin and Alison Chisholm.
Kevin, who belongs to a long line of family associated with harness racing, was formally based at Louth Park.
Since the exchange on May 16 Crucial Decision has claimed one win – his last start at The Gardens on Friday night with an impressive 29.96 seconds over 515m.
Tonight he will only need to run 450m and Cheetham said this should not bother the two year old too much.
“He run good at the Gardens, but that was over 515m and now he is back to 450m,” Cheetham said.
“It might hold him up a little bit but he has some early pace so he will be a good chance.”
Milton, the full brother to Crucial Decision, will take part in heat three of the Maitland to City (race eight) and Cheetham said a double would “come in handy”.
A win to Milton, who has the fastest qualifying time across the field over the 450m at Maitland, would put him closer to a run in Sydney.
“He has been running over 600m, but you have got to do it because this is the only distance at Maitland that can get you a run down at Wentworth Park,” Cheetham said.
There will be four Maitland to City heats and two Bill Deguara Trophy heats as well as two maidens and the Kempsey to Maitland Final.
The highlight of the 10-race card appears to be the battle in race six – heat one of the Maitland to City – between Standing Ovation, Hesa Horse and Porplyzia.
Maitland Greyhounds sponsorship and promotions manager Fred Robertson said the bet of the day was race two number one – Octane Tigger.
Racing starts at 3.52pm.
