Proud fathers to race their sons

10 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
World rated sidecar pairing Grant Bond and Glenn Cox will be pitted against their sons at this weekend’s NSW titles.

Hayden Bond and Brady Cox are set to make their senior debut in the state championships at Tamworth, while Jackson Bond and Liam Cox will line up for the NSW Junior Championships the same weekend.

“All up it will be a pretty big weekend,” Bond snr said.

Bond and Cox snr will hit the track in their first race meeting since November’s world titles where they came third.

“It’s one of the strongest fields we’ve had for a few years,” Bond snr said.

“We’ve got all the locals, as well as three to four Queenslanders and Victorians.”

World champion Darrin Treloar will go into the meet as favourite.

Sydney based Treloar has stamped himself as one of Australia’s most successful sidecar riders, having won five National Speedway Sidecar Titles and 23 state titles.

“We had a good result (at the world championships) but we haven’t had a ride since,” Bond snr said.

“We don’t ride as often these days but it usually seems to come together on the night.”

Supported by Doctor Mak Engines, Husky Oils and Batteries, The Bowra Hotel and Harness Master Australia, the pair hope to better their fifth place performance from last year.

This Saturday’s state championships will be the first time Hayden and Brady have competed in the senior ranks.

“It’s only in the last 12 months that they’ve started to ride the new bike,” Bond snr said.

“They’re good riders but it’s obviously a bit of a step up from the 250cc they rode in juniors to the 1000cc.”

The top five competitors will be seeded straight through, this includes Bond snr and Treloar, while another 16 riders will compete in a qualifying round for 11 spots to make the championship field.

Hayden and Brady will compete in the qualifying round to try and gain a spot in the championship.

“It’s a pretty hard meeting for your first one, but that’s just the way it happened,” Bond snr said. “They finished second in the Australian junior championships consecutively for the past two years and second in the NSW championships last year.”
