Kidd to miss derby

28 Apr, 2005 08:31 AM
Kurri Kurri Bulldogs centre Stephen Kidd will miss Saturday's Newcastle Rugby League derby with Maitland after copping a two week suspension.
Kidd was given a two-week stint on the sideline by the NRL judiciary this week after he was sent off for abusing the referee in the Dogs' 23-16 loss to the Northern Blues.
Kurri Kurri first grade manager Daryl Chapman said the Dogs would sorely miss Kidd's impact out wide, with captain-coach Paul Skovgaard yet to decide on his replacement.
Chapman said the new centre would be selected tonight at training, with the reliable Daniel Doyle expected to come into the team on the wing with Alfred Whaleboat shifting to the centres.
Bulldogs forward Marty Luisia hasn't been named in the 15 for Saturday's match, but the hard-running prop is still a chance of taking on the Pumpkin Pickers.
Luisia cracked a bone in his hand in his return match last Saturday and he will be given until Saturday morning to prove his fitness for the all-important match at Maitland Sportsground.
The home side has been rocked by injuries in the lead up to the match, with a number of key players out and question marks remaining on the fitness of a number of others.
Captain Brett Grogan has been named at five-eighth, despite going off with a knee injury against Wyong on Sunday, with Shane Ngaheu to partner him in the halves.
Regular number seven Shayne Vonbon, who suffered a shoulder injury against the Kangaroos, will start at hooker in place of the injured Ben Newcombe (finger).
It is the only change to the Pickers' pack with Steve Warburton and Shane Hoskings expected to be right to play ion Saturday despite coming off early in the side's 60-6 thrashing at the hands of Wyong.
But Maitland's backline has a completely different look about it with centres John Newton (knee) and Brad Burrows (leg) missing out wide.
Newcastle Knights Jersey Flegg squad member Alex McCosker gets his chance in the top grade in jumper number four after impressive perfromances in reserve grade, while Phil Baker is the new flanker.
First grade kicks off at 3pm on Saturday.
