Bulls’ green and gold pride

8/05/2008 9:28:00 AM
The Morpeth Bulls under-8s rugby league side will be the envy of kids across the nation this Friday night as they grace the turf of the Sydney Cricket Ground.

This lucky team was chosen as one of six teams across Australia to play before the Kangaroos clash with the Kiwis in the Centenary Test.

The one thing that sets these 10 junior rugby league fanatics apart from the hundreds of applicants from across the country is the jerseys on their back.

The Morpeth Bulls, who take the field each week in green and gold jerseys, will go head to head with Wentworthville from Sydney, who not-so-coincidentally wear black and white.

Morpeth Rugby League president Robert Carter said this mock-international encounter has made these boys the toast of the small rugby league crazed town.

“This really will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for these kids,” he said.

“Of the 260 kids we have in this club, 260 of them wish they were playing under-8s.

Carter said he applied to NSW Rugby League on behalf of the whole club and was told the under-8s team was the one they were after.

The Morpeth Bulls will take part in the pre-game entertainment and the opening ceremony.

The Kangaroos will run out onto a world stage on Friday Night, flanked by these eight-year-olds, who will no doubt be staring in awe.

An excited Morpeth Bulls will, like the Kangaroos and Kiwis, arrive to the stadium by bus on Friday afternoon, well before they are due to run on.
