Red Dogs’ new tricks

13 May, 2008 08:25 AM
West Maitland Red Dogs coach Shawn Humbles wasn’t sure where it came from, but something changed within his players on Friday night.

The Red Dogs that delivered a round four 42-2 trouncing of Waratah Mayfield were a different team to the one that took the field in round one.

Friday’s team tackled everything that moved in a performance that kept the at-home Waratah Mayfield squad scoreless for 77 minutes.

Humbles was a proud coach following what he believes was the confidence booster his men needed.

“We really got our confidence back on Friday. They held us out for about 15 minutes then we got on top of them,” Humbles said.

Following an early first-half stand from Waratah Mayfield, West Maitland lent on their quicker players to find holes in the home side’s defence.

The speed of fullback Andrew Roberts proved the key in unravelling a lacklustre Waratah Mayfield who conceded a 22-0 scoreline by the break.

Waratah Mayfield was in no mood to turn things around in the second half, allowing Roberts to score again 18 seconds after the break.

Standout performances have been few and far between this year, but there was more than one Red Dog ready to take the stand on Friday, with veteran Robbie Wallace scoring a hat-trick of four-pointers.

Humbles praised the work of his forwards, saying they set the winning platform.

“We really overpowered their forwards. Christian Agnue, Adrian Lucas and Nathan Cronin were real standouts in the forwards,” he said.

“The forwards got us going forward, which allowed our backs to spread it wide.”

To Humbles it felt like it was one of those nights. His said his side’s handling was exceptional and low percentage passes were avoided.

“Instead of just throwing the ball away like we usually do, we actually held onto it this time. We kept the ball in hand until opportunities came up,” Humbles said.
