The Rutherford region will be flying the flag for Maitland rugby league in the finals of the annual Knights Knockout competition being held at Birmingham Gardens today.
Rutherford Technology High School will contest the under-15s division while St Paul’s, Rutherford, will be aiming for the top in the 10 years A section.
St Paul’s will take on Singleton Heights Public School in the opening match of the day while St Pius, Adamstown, will be the opponents for Rutherford Technology High School.
Rutherford will be hoping to continue its winning form after remaining undefeated through its four matches last week.
Rutherford claimed quarter-final and semi-final wins against Morisset High School and Lambton High School at Lakeside on Monday before backing it up in Country Cup action at Cessnock’s Baddely Park on Wednesday.
Rutherford, who will play semi-finals of the Country Cup in Armidale later this month, scored two tries in the final three minutes to secure a 16-all draw with Singleton High School before a narrow 22-20 win against Tuggerah High School courtesy of a last minute try to centre Daniel White.
Now, last year’s statewide under-14s Buckley Shield winners are staring down the barrel of a Knights Knockout trophy.
“We are looking okay and hopefully we can keep the roll on,” Rutherford coach Paul Johns said.
St Paul’s will be looking to make the most of its first finals appearance in the 10 years division since 2003 according to coach Bernadette Burgess.
“They have been playing fantastic with great sportsmanship and everyone has worked together so fingers crossed it works today,” Burgess said.
Captain Jesse Cronin scored eight tries in the round robin stages before St Paul’s, trained by Troy Ernst, defeated Thornton Public School 12-4 in the semi-final.
St Paul’s kick off at 10am while Rutherford Technology High School start its match at 1.50pm.
