O’Toole finding form at fullback

03 Jul, 2009 09:01 AM
A return to fullback has seen a return to the try scorers’ list for Blacks first grader Jono O’Toole.

O’Toole started the year at five-eighth and since his return to the more familiar number 15 jersey against the Singleton Bulls on June 11 the 21-year-old has scored three tries in as many weeks.

“There is a little bit more room to move at fullback than five-eighth,” O’Toole said.

“Five-eighth was a challenge but I improved my ball skills and appreciated the chance.

“But having Matty (Blacks five-eighth Matthew Jarrett) back helps and we are playing simple football with a constructive game plan.

“We are able to score on the back of phases after building pressure.”

This is where O’Toole can inject himself at will during the Blacks’ attacking raids.

He did so twice on Saturday with an impressive try scoring double during the Blacks’ memorable 28-19 win against the Hamilton Hawks.

It means O’Toole, who had not previously beaten the Hawks during his first grade career, now sits fourth on the Newcastle and Hunter Rugby Union Premier Grade try scorers list.

His personal tally of eight tries has O’Toole two behind leader Jay Strachan (Mereweather Carlton) and his opposite number this weekend – Wanderers fullback Paul Milotkowski.

This will become a pivotal battle and one Blacks coach Geoff Golledge was well aware of heading into Saturday’s crucial round 10 clash with the competition leaders at No.2 Sportsground.

Golledge knows the danger of the speed in the Wanderers back three.

He also knows the potency of the Two Blues at the back of the scrum, which includes Newcastle representative captain Rob Ashton and Dan Kevill, who is second in the Anderson Medal points.

Golledge said they would need to be shut down and starved of the ball, which means the fourth-placed Blacks would need to maintain possession.

Most things in that department are in check but an improvement in the line out would be optimal for the Blacks.

All things going to plan Golledge said the Blacks would finish the stronger with the Wanderers facing their third match in seven days following its 39-24 win over Mereweather Carlton on Saturday and a 31-19 mid-week victory over The Waratahs.

“We are hoping they will tire at the back end a bit,” Golledge said.

Winger Tim Gibbs is unavailable with an ankle injury and David Quinn will step up from reserve grade to fill the void while former NSW Country representative Darren Dimmock will slot back into the second row for the hard working Kris Doyle.

The Wanderers won 38-22 in round two.

The match kicks off at 3.30pm.

In other Premier Grade matches Hamilton will be looking to bounce back against Southern Beaches at Passmore Oval, Merewether Carlton travel to Strong Oval for its clash with Nelson Bay, the Lake Macquarie Roos will be bounding towards their fifth consecutive victory when they meet the students at University Oval while Southern Beaches will make the trek up the valley to play the Singleton Bulls at Rugby Park.

Blacks XV: 1 Dan Leadley 2 Dan Runchell 3 Ben Emmett 4 Jono Wotton 5 Darren Dimmock 6 Mick Hickling 7 Nick Davidson 8 Adam Perkins 9 Luke Cunningham 10 Matthew Jarrett 11 David Quinn 12 Shane Edmonds 13 James Bonomini 14 Christian Punch 15 Jono O’Toole
