This weekend Ashtonfield’s Brandon Parrey will stepping out on court with one thing on his mind – a State title.
Parrey, 14, will be one of three Northumberland Region representatives vying for the Ken Rosewell Cup at Gosford this weekend.
The statewide teams competition attracts the best under-14 tennis players from across NSW and Parrey will be out to show his opponents the depth of tennis talent in the Maitland area.
Parrey will be joined in the Northumberland team by training partner Jack Maddocks and the Central Coast’s Nathan Doney in a three-man squad bidding for success this weekend.
Parrey, who trains under Greg Brownlow in the Future Stars Academy, said he felt honoured to make the Northumberland squad to contest the cup.
“Especially considering it was so close out of four boys and someone had to miss out,” Parrey said.
Now Parrey wants to make the most of this opportunity and hopefully replicate the success he experienced at the state-wide under-10 competition – the John Whittaker Cup – in 2005.
At that tournament Northumberland finished as champions.
The John Whittaker Cup is the equivalent competition to the Ken Rosewell Cup but for the younger age group.
In between times in 2007 Parrey was part of the Northumberland squad that finished as runners-up to South East at the under-12 event.
Now, the final beckons once more and Parrey will take good form into the Ken Rosewell Cup.
Parrey is leading the under-14 pointscore in the 2009 Northumberland Medibank Junior Devolpment Series after a string of consistent results.
The Year 8 student at Maitland Grossmann High School defeated Maddocks in the final at Cessnock on the weekend to increase his lead in the competition.
It also comes on the back of a doubles win and a singles semi-final appearance at the Newcastle Junior Open as well as semi-final show downs in doubles at the Hunter Valley Junior Grasscourt and Illawarra Junior Championship.
Parrey is ranked 1009 on the Australian Open Tennis list and is hoping to improve on this with upcoming ranking tournaments such as the State Age Championships and the NSW Country Championships.
Parrey said he loves the sport and wants to make a career out of it.
“It is my passion,” Parrey said.
“Eventually I want to make the pro tour.”
