Australian Olympian Lisa Corrigan will start her Commonwealth Games campaign in Maitland this weekend at the Maitland Triathlon and Multi Sport Festival.
The 24-year-old middle distance runner, who represented Australia in the 1500m at the Beijing Olympic Games last year, will compete in the Maitland Country Fun Run over 4km at Morpeth on Sunday.
Corrigan will start the race as red hot favourite but her focus goes well beyond Sunday’s finish line on the banks of the Hunter River.
It lies more than 10,000km away on the banks of the Yamuna River at a 60,000 capacity stadium called the Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Complex.
“This (Maitland Country Fun Run) is the start of my build up to the Commonwealth Games,” Corrigan said.
Corrigan has her sights set on representing Australia at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India, in October next year with trials for the squad being held in April.
But first stop is Maitland in what will be Corrigan’s first competitive race since the Australian Athletics Championships in March.
She decided to use the race as a warm-up to the super competitive 5km Noosa Bolt being held later this month and only did so after her boyfriend - Maitland triathlete Brendan Sexton - told her about the Maitland Country Fun Run.
The 4km fun run starts at 10.05am from Queens Wharf, Morpeth, while the 8km event begins at 10am.
