Maitland Triathlon Club invested in its strong junior base on Sunday with a skills day at Maitland Park.
More than 40 primary school-aged children attended the day and were split up into four groups to practice the elements involved in completing a triathlon.
The children refined their skills in swimming, cycling, running and the transition between each leg, ahead of next Sunday’s round of junior triathlon.
Maitland Triathlon Club publicity officer Craig Shafer said the club had decided that instead of hosting another “Try a Tri Day” like last year, they would polish the skills of their already healthy junior ranks.
“The day wasn’t about earmarking future stars, the emphasis was more on improving each of the kids’ talents and enjoying themselves,” he said.
“We were focusing on simplifying the skills and
teaching a few triathlon-based talents to help the kids take the step to the next level.
“It also makes the experience a bit safer because we have coaches and experts at each station.”
Shafer said while the majority of kids who attended were already members, the new faces who took in the day received vital information ahead of the club race next week.
Every participant on Sunday received a Maitland Triathlon Club t-shirt and swimming cap.
The club intends to run two more similar sessions throughout the season.
The junior triathlon starts at 7am on Sunday, with the seniors starting at 8am at Maitland Park.
