Karen Webb produced the race of her life at Maitland Park on Sunday but no-one was more surprised than Webb herself.
Webb finished the second race of the Maitland Triathlon Club season in under an hour – her best time at the club – in the same month she had competed at the World Masters Games in Sydney and the 2009 Australian Masters Road Cycling Championships.
The 38-year-old from Bolwarra Heights had been gearing her training towards the cycling events and did not expect to perform as well as she did in the multi-leg event on the weekend.
Webb recorded a time of 58.37 in the senior class, which entails a 450m swim, 18km bike and 4km run, and finished six minutes ahead of her nearest rival.
“It was probably my best time,” Webb said.
“I was pretty surprised but very happy – I had not done any running training and very little swim training because I had been concentrating on my cycling.”
Webb had been focused on national and international cycling events.
Earlier this month, Webb claimed a silver medal at the Australian Masters Road Cycling Championships in Canberra in the women’s 35-39-years road race while finishing narrowly outside the medals on two occasions (women’s 35-39-years road race and time trial) with two fourths at the World Masters Games in Sydney.
“It was really great competition and a really great experience,” Webb said.
But she was on top of the podium after the club triathlon at Maitland on Sunday.
Webb said she was happy with her swim and hung on during the run but her bike leg – in ideal conditions – was the crucial part of her
performance.
Kim Fletcher finished behind Webb in the women’s senior event in a time of 1.04.09 while Megan King was third in 1.06.52.
Kevin Picton was the pick of the senior men and completed the course in 53.07 while Tony Anderson was hot on his heels finishing in 53.50.
In the sub junior category (under-9) Lewis Daly (11.32) was the best of the boys over the 100m swim, 2km bike and 500m run while Lily Cox (13.12) was the best of the girls.
In the junior category (under-12) Izaac Daly (15.55), Blake Picton (16.29) and Zachery Treloar (16.36) finished on the podium for the boys after the 150m swim, 4km bike and 1km run while it was Sophie Hodgson (16.33), Ellen Webb (16.46) and Kayla Ashbourne (19.36) leading the girls.
Over the 250m swim, 10km bike and 2km run in the intermediate division (under-14) Louis Welbourne (41.15) and Grace Humphreys (42.06) were the best of the Maitland finishers in the boys’ and girls’ races respectively.
