Triathletes set eyes on club championships

03 Jun, 2009 08:42 AM
A strong focus on the club championships will be one of the objectives for newly elected Maitland Triathlon Club president Ja Davis.

Davis has stepped up to fill the void left by Kath Lawrence, who stepped down from the top job at the club’s annual general meeting last week after two years of dedicated service, and the 39-year-old already has season 2009-2010 well and truly in his sights.

“I want to put a strong focus on the club championships,” Davis said.

“A lot of clubs expected us to be a force last year and when there were only four of us there it was very disappointing.”

“There will be a strong focus on the juniors.”

“The numbers increased last season, especially after the Try-A-Tri Day.”

The overall numbers were also at an all time high with 407 club members registered in 2008-2009.

“We are one of the largest non-capital city clubs in the country,” Davis said.

To help steer the ever growing club Davis will be assisted by a new look committee, which includes seven new faces.

Brendan Clarke will take on the treasurers role, Scott Sullivan the job of registrar and Diane Jenison will be the club nutritionist.

The general committee also welcomes Paul Roberts, Belinda Farley and Lyn Rizzi on board.

“You always need some new ideas, new perspectives and I can only see this as a positive for the club,” Davis said.

Some familiar faces have changed places as well with the club’s leading racer Craig Shafer taking on the role as publicity officer from Matt Hubbard while Lawrence will join the general committee.

Davis said Lawrence would provide him with invaluable support and the pair shared a good working rapport.

“I used to work fairly closely with Kath on most things,” Davis said.

Davis, who has spent the last four years as race director, said Lawrence had pointed the club in the right direction during her reign.

“She has done a fantastic job,” Davis said.

“The club has become more professional.”

Davis will continue to race at the club along with his two daughters - Roxy, 11, and Zali, 9.

Davis said new members were welcome at the club and no triathlon experience would be required. For more information check out the club’s website via www.mtc.org.au.
