Black spot is the Hunter’s shame

Shame on everyone who has failed to ensure that a solution to a notorious stretch of road at Harpers Hill is fixed as quickly as possible.

Today, loved ones of Sue Welch will join the loved one of the other nine people who have lost their lives there in the Past 12 years in asking how many more people have to die before something is done.

After a very public community campaign early this year, it was announced that $1 million would be spent on making a relatively short stretch of the New England Highway through Harpers Hill safe.

Yet no road works have started.

It is understood that under the terms of the allocation the money must be spent by June 30, 2010.

One question that needs to be answered is whether anyone at the RTA has looked at the coroners’ reports from any of the fatalities that have occured on this stretch of road? If not, why not?

While the problems associated with this road are well documented, no one is claiming that the solution is simple.

Some residents, for example, believe a central mediam safety barrier would have save lives.

Others, however, believe that the barrier would make it more dangerous for school children to cross the road when catching or alighting from buses.

Wildlife could also be caught in the middle of the road with nowhere to go, potentially causing even more accidents.

Community consultation is important.

Afterall, the people who live on this horror stretch of road, know probably better than anyone what the problems are and the potential solutions.

But at some point the talking has to come to an end and the work needs to start on solving the problems of horror hill.
