Motorists across NSW would be breathing a sigh of relief now that the State Government’s new demerit point scheme is in place.
The new system is fairer – reducing the penalty for motorists doing between 1kph and 10kph over the speed limit to one demerit point and an $84 fine.
Under the new system, you will lose three points for being 11-20kph over the limit and four points for 21-30kph over the limit.
Previously, motorists caught doing between 1kph and 30kph over the speed limit were slugged three demerit points.
The fine, however, varied from $81 for those travelling 1-15kph over the limit to $243 for 15-30kph.
Some would argue that anyone caught speeding should be slugged harshly, but a motorist just a few kilometres per hour over the speed limit – and we’ve all been there through a lapse in concentration – does not deserve the same loss of points as a person travelling at 30kph over the limit.
There is a big difference between a lapse in judgement and deliberate speeding – and the new demerit system now reflects that.
Roads minister Michael Daley also believes the new system is fairer, but warned motorists the changes were not an invitation to speed and that safety for all road users was still paramount.
The Government has listened to motorists and acted on their concerns.
It’s now up to motorists not to abuse the new system. Please drive safely, stay within the speed limit and keep our roads safe for all.
