Chad Shedden, 34, has been found guilty of murdering Joshua Maynard in a Raymond Terrace street fight.
The jury delivered its verdict in Newcastle Supreme Court this morning.
Shedden had pleaded not guilty to murder but guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of self defence.
The jury heard almost four weeks of evidence from boys involved in the fight on Links Drive just before midnight on June 29, 2010.
Joshua Maynard was in a car with a group of mates, including his brother Thomas, when they stopped in the street, the court heard.
Shedden, his brother John and a group of about 30 people crowded around the car and threw things including metal poles as it approached.
Shedden told the court he had a loaded shotgun up his sleeve and shot Joshua Maynard when he felt his life was in danger.
He said he was defending himself and his brother but only meant to scare them.
Joshua Maynard was holding a large knife or sword when he got out of the car, Shedden said.
A series of violent events took place in the lead up to the shooting.
Shedden is expected to be sentenced on July 6.
