The 34-year-old habitual disqualified driver led police on a 150km/h chase from through Buchanan on August 24 last year.

The court heard Dawson had been disqualified from driving until 2069, but was detected driving an unregistered Hyundai sedan about 5.20pm. 

Dawson, of Teece Street, Weston, pulled the car over to the roadside, but took off, crossing unbroken lines on some blind corners and overtaking several cars as he reached speeds of up to 158km/h. 

He stopped on a road construction site and reversed at speed into the police car before he jumped out and ran. 

Police chased Dawson down an embankment and across a creek but he escaped. 

The police dog squad searched the area to no avail. 

Dawson was later identified as the driver by a passenger who police caught. 

In court on Friday, the police prosecution described the 15 kilometre pursuit at the upper end of the scale because of the “extreme speeds” reached. 

Dawson had initially pleaded not guilty to the pursuit and it ­wasn’t until viewing an in-car police video on the day of the ­hearing that he changed his pleas to four charges. 

The father-to-be wept in the dock as his family learnt he would be jailed for 18 months with a non-parole period of 12 months for two charges of driving while disqualified and police pursuit respectively. 

For the driving while disqualified he was disqualified a further two years and three years for the police pursuit – taking his ­combined disqualification period to 2072. 

He was convicted for the two remaining matters of driving an uninsured and unregistered vehicle without further penalty. 

“When you put the public at risk and put police at risk by reversing into them you must pay the price and that is a period in ­custody,” magistrate Sharron Crews said. 

“You are disqualified into the never never.”
