A Maitland man who has dedicated his time to helping those in need has been presented with a St Vincent de Paul Award for social justice.

John Hakes – a member of the St Vincent de Paul East Maitland Conference – was presented with the award last night during an inaugural dinner designed to bring homelessness into the spotlight.
Mr Hakes is also chairman of the William’s Place project – a campaign aimed at building a multi-million dollar complex to alleviate Maitland’s growing homelessness.
Last night’s event at East Maitland Bowling Club also featured national head of the St Vincent de Paul Society Dr John Falzon.
Dr Falzon is an advocate for a more equitable society and has written and spoken widely on the structural causes of marginalisation and inequality in Australia.
St Vincent de Paul was ordained into the priesthood on September 23, 1600, aged 20 years, as a Catholic priest dedicated to serving the poor.
