Maitland City Council approved plans for Riverview Estate in the city’s west last night despite community fears it would encroach on the state heritage-listed Georgian-style residence.
Cr Henry Meskauskas said the proposal met all the criteria but raised fears the additional residents would put a strain on roads.
“Infrastructure again is a major concern,” he said. “I’m not against the development but I’m still waiting for the letters of support from the state government for an inner city bypass and to make the New England Highway four lanes from Rutherford to Lochinvar.”
The development application was approved unanimously.
The plans for Riverview Estate were approved with a list of conditions.
They include an eight- to 10-metre dense landscape buffer along the north-west perimeter of the estate where it meets Anambah House.
With Anambah House overlooking the development site, restrictions will be put on fencing and roofing materials.
Fencing will consist of natural earthy tones. Highly reflective roofing will also be avoided.
Other conditions include that lots must be no smaller than 450 square metres.
