The tertiary institution was one of 20 National Disability Co-ordination Officer organisations appointed nationally by the federal government.
They will become a contact point for other organisations, employers, schools, universities and training providers, with the program designed to remove
barriers that prevent people with disability accessing tertiary education and meaningful employment.
As the successful applicant for the Hunter, the University of Newcastle will also provide practical assistance and advice to people with a disability and their families.
The government will invest $13 million in the program during the next three years.
Federal Minister for Higher Education and Skills Sharon Bird said disability should not stop someone pursuing their interest in university or further training.
