Beresfield to take on Edgeworth for Hunter title

Beresfield Public School will contest the final of the Hunter Region PSSA rugby league competition after defeating Old Bar Public School 16-12.

It is the furthest Beresfield has reached in the Classic Shield Cup, claiming victory in all five games on the way to winning Pool A.

They will now face Pool B winners Edgeworth Public School, who defeated The Junction, next week in a bid to be crowned Hunter champions.

Beresfield’s run to the Hunter final started with a convincing 48-0 win over Woodberry Public School in round one.

Their 38-4 win over Bolwarra Public School saw them advance to round three, with subsequent victories over Telarah and Nulkaba setting up their round five win against Old Bar.

Beresfield are now down to the last two teams still alive in the Hunter region, with more than 50 entering the competition at the start of the year.

Beresfield Public School teacher and rugby league co-ordinator Jacqui Jones said the whole school was delighted with the team’s efforts.

“We are very proud of the boys not only for how far they have made it but also their sportsmanship and their ability to work as a team in every game they have played,” Jones said.
