Patrick Wood and Jacob Stuart are two of five students from the University of Newcastle chosen for an international media internship to film a documentary on France’s Festival Les Cultures du Monde.

Working alongside media production lecturer Dr Vikrant Kishore, the students will travel to Gannat – a small village five hours from Paris – to capture the festival.

“Essentially we’ll be there to film a documentary on the festival and try to build a story about it,” Mr Stuart, 22, of Thornton, said.

“So we’ll have to wait and see what unfolds.”

The festival is organised by the French National Association of Cultures and Traditions to celebrate and preserve international folk heritage. It attracts about 65,000 people.

“This is exactly what I want to do and it combines everything I love. I’m really excited about anything that gets me behind a camera and anything that lets me travel,” Mr Wood, 20, of Woodville, said.

“But the thing about documentaries is they provide you with the opportunity to tell a story and that’s what I love ... storytelling.”

Dr Kishore said the documentary aims to capture how the festival has become a site for cultural intermingling and globalisation.

“The students will be invited and hosted by local families for lunch and dinner in and around Gannat, which will give them a glimpse of the French countryside living and culture.”
