SENTENCED: Joshua Maynard was murdered in June, 2010.
He smirked at detectives as he was led from court in May after being found guilty of murder.
But there was no smile or smirk on Friday as Chad Shedden was sentenced to a maximum of 27 years jail with a non-parole period of 19 years, for the murder of Joshua Maynard, 21, at Raymond Terrace on June 29, 2010.
The 34-year-old Raymond Terrace man had previously pleaded guilty to manslaughter and said he had acted in self-defence and defence of his brother John.
Mr Maynard had allegedly been involved in an earlier bashing.
Later, he was in a car in Links Drive with a group of mates, including his brother Thomas, when it was stopped by a large group of people in Links Drive.
Shedden and his brother John were among them.
Mr Maynard got out of the car and Shedden shot the father-of-two, in the chest with a sawn-off shotgun.
Sheddon’s argument for self-defence had been that Mr Maynard had threatened him with a knife of some sort.
But witnesses during the trial – all for the defence – reported the weapon as being a knife, a sword and a machete.
The judge, Justice Elizabeth Fullerton, discounted that evidence and said Mr Maynard was in all likelihood unarmed at the time of the shooting.
Reviled by his family for testifying against his brother, John Shedden is serving nine years for his part in the murder.
Shedden will be eligible for parole on July 12, 2031.
